MIXING
See sidechain compression, not just hear it
Sidechain is usually taught as a mixing fix for kick and bass clashing, which is the least interesting thing it does. This visualizer shows the compressor's envelope against the kick in real time.
Try it
- Load a sustained pad and a four-on-the-floor kick.
- Turn sidechain on. Watch the envelope shape against the kick.
- Set release very short, then very long.
- Mute the kick entirely and leave the sidechain running.
What to listen for
With the kick muted, the pad is still pumping in time. The rhythm is still there. The compressor is not fixing a frequency clash, it is playing a part.
