When it opens, a six-step tour shows where everything is. Space plays and stops, Ctrl+Z undoes, and double-clicking a knob resets it.

OHXALA RECORDS Studio

On a small screen

It needs a computer or a tablet.

The Studio puts drums, piano roll and mixing on one screen, and it does not run on phones. Save this page and open it on a bigger screen.

Inside

Five modules, in signal order.

Each module does something that has its own tool on this site, where you can hear that concept alone before you use it inside a track.

  1. 01
    Transport

Play and stop, BPM with tap tempo, pattern length, metronome and MIDI keyboard input. This is the bar that sets the time for everything else.

  2. 02
    Sequencer

A drum rack with kick, closed hi-hat, open hi-hat and clap, plus three melodic tracks. You switch each grid cell on and get mute and solo per track.

Learn it on its ownDrum machineKick designer
  3. 03
    Piano roll

For bass, chords and lead you write notes one by one, with length and octave. Click to paint, drag to move and right-click to delete.

  4. 04
    Channel

Every instrument has its own channel: three-band EQ, pan, a low-pass or high-pass filter with resonance, and an ADSR envelope.

  5. 05
    Master

The whole mix runs through EQ, compressor, saturation and limiter, with momentary and integrated LUFS, a spectrum and stereo width with a mono button.

Try this now

A house groove in ten minutes.

  1. Set the BPM to 124 and switch the KICK on every beat.
  2. Add the O.HAT on the offbeats and the CLAP on beats two and four.
  3. On the BASS track, write a short note in the piano roll right after each kick.
  4. On CHORDS, write one long chord at the start of the pattern.
  5. Turn on the master compressor and limiter and watch the integrated LUFS. Reset the reading after each change.
  6. Use Export to save the project and pick it up later.

What to listen for

With the bass right after the kick, each one gets its own moment and the low end stays clean. Move the bass on top of the kick and hear the two add up into one blurrier low block.

The same exercise, step by step and with a full structure, is in the article Sketch your first track in the browser.

How far it goes

Built for sketching, not finishing.

The Studio does not export audio or MIDI. The project saves to a file the Studio opens again, and that is what it is for: understanding how the parts of a track fit together and testing an idea in a few minutes, with nothing to install.

To finish a track and release it, the next step is a DAW. The article Best DAW for electronic music compares the main ones on what matters when you are starting out.

In the course

From sketch to Ableton Live.

In the EMPB, the same ideas move from the browser into Live, chapter by chapter, until you have a mastered WAV. The tools show up inside the lessons.

Open it and make your first pattern.

It is free, runs in the browser and saves the project to a file of your own. The other 20 tools teach each part on its own.
