Design your kick: the anatomy of a sound by genre

A "professional" kick sample pack rarely fixes the actual problem. You drop one into the track, it sounds fine on its own, and it still does not sit right once the rest of the arrangement is playing, because the pack was tuned and shaped for a different tempo, a different low end, a different genre than the one you are making. A kick built for a peak time techno set and a kick built for a warm afro house groove are not the same sound with a different sample on top. They are built differently from the ground up.

Building one from scratch, deliberately, for the genre in front of you, is more reliable than searching a sample library for the one that happens to fit. This article breaks a kick down into the layers that actually shape it, explains what changes those layers per genre, and gives you an interactive tool below to hear the difference while you adjust it.

A kick is a stack of layers, not one sound

Every synthesized kick in electronic music, from Ableton's own Operator recipes to the 909 emulations built into most drum machines, comes down to the same handful of layers stacked on top of each other.

The body carries the weight. It is a sine wave with a pitch envelope on it: the frequency starts high and drops fast to the note you actually tuned the kick to, usually somewhere between 45Hz and 60Hz. That drop is what gives a kick its punch. A slow drop reads as a softer, rounder hit; a fast drop, in the range of 35 to 45 milliseconds, is the sharp, thudding character associated with a 909-style kick.

The click sits on top and does a different job. It is a short, high-pitched transient, often no more than ten to twenty milliseconds long, that gives the ear something to grab onto through a busy mix or a small speaker. Take it away and a kick turns into a dull thump that disappears the moment other elements come in.

A layer of filtered noise adds texture to that same transient, the mechanical "bang" a real drum has and a pure sine wave does not.

Drive, a saturation stage, adds harmonics above the fundamental. A 50Hz sine wave barely exists on a phone speaker or a cheap pair of earbuds; the harmonics saturation adds are what let a listener perceive the kick on systems that cannot reproduce the sub itself.

Last, an EQ move around 150Hz decides how much weight the kick carries in that band. Push it and the kick sounds warmer and rounder. Cut it and there is room for a bass line to sit underneath without both fighting for the same space, which matters more the more layers a track already has.

None of these five decisions exist in isolation. Change the pitch envelope's decay time and the click reads differently against it. Add drive and the EQ move needed to keep the low end clean changes too. A genre is really just a consistent set of choices across these five layers, repeated often enough that it becomes a recognisable sound.

House: short envelope, present click

A house kick leans on the fast, sharp pitch envelope described above, close to the classic 909 character, paired with a clear click and a warmth boost around 150Hz. It needs to read instantly on a club system without eating the space a bassline and a vocal chop both want. Moderate drive holds it together without making it aggressive.

Techno: engineered for a bigger, harder system

A techno kick is not just a louder house kick. Producers building for peak time routinely separate the sound into distinct low, mid and high bands and treat each one, cutting narrow pockets around 100Hz and 150 to 170Hz to stop the layers building into mud, then boosting a "crack" band around 5kHz so the transient survives on a rig with a much larger, more aggressive low end than a listening room. That EQ move is a cut where house takes a boost. The kick is also driven harder, and mixed close to mono, because a wide stereo low end falls apart on a large system.

Organic house and afro house: warmth over punch

Both genres pull away from the sharp click and lean into a rounder, warmer low end instead: a softer pitch sweep, minimal high frequency snap, and extra weight around 150Hz rather than a cut. The kick is usually tuned to the root note of the track rather than left at a fixed frequency, so it sits inside the harmony instead of fighting it.

Here is the honest part. Unlike house and techno, the difference between organic house and afro house is not primarily a synthesis recipe. It shows up more in what surrounds the kick: the percussion arrangement carrying most of the rhythmic movement in afro house, live-sounding layering and reverb treatment doing more of the work in organic house. The tool below still gives each one a distinct setting, closer to static and even less clicky for afro house, a touch more pitch movement for organic house, but that distinction is an editorial choice built from how each genre is usually described, not a documented technique the way the 150Hz notch in a techno kick is. Worth knowing if you go looking for a source that pins it down further.

Every value above is a starting point, not a rule. Body is an EQ move at 150Hz: positive numbers add warmth, techno's negative number is a notch that clears space instead. None of it means anything until you hear it move, which is what the tool is for.

The beat is done. The hats sit right, the clap lands where you want it, and you finally drop the bassline in. Then the low end turns to mud, so you put a compressor on the bass, open the sidechain section, and go looking for the kick in the source list. It is not there. What you find is a single entry called Drums, the whole kit, hats and claps and percussion included. Sidechaining the bass to that is useless.

The compressor is not the problem. The problem was decided twenty minutes earlier, when you dropped every sample into one drum rack and gave the kick nowhere of its own to live.

This article fixes that at the root. You will build a drum rack from scratch, pull the kick out onto its own track, and save the whole thing so you never have to do the setup again.

Why the kick leaves the rack

A drum rack is one device on one track. Everything inside it shares a single output, which has four consequences a beginner usually discovers too late.

The first is routing. Anything after the rack in the chain, and anything you send the track to, applies to the entire kit at once.

The second is processing. A compressor set to control the weight of a kick has an attack and release measured for a sound with a long decay. Put that same compressor across the full kit and it starts breathing on every hat.

The third is gain staging. The kick is usually the loudest single element in a dance track. When it is bundled with the rest of the kit, its level and the kit's level are the same fader, and you lose the ability to move one without the other.

The fourth is sidechaining, which is the one that sends most people looking for answers. Live's compressor can listen to any track in the set, but it cannot listen to one pad inside a rack. If the kick has no track, there is nothing to point at.

There is a way to route an individual chain out of a rack to its own audio track from inside the rack's input and output section. It works, and once you are comfortable in Live it is worth knowing. It is not where a beginner should start, because it hides the structure of the session behind a menu instead of showing it in the arrangement.

Phase 1: prepare the session

Open an empty set and make two MIDI tracks. Name the first KICK and the second DRUMS. Give them different colours.

This takes ten seconds and it is the whole point of the article. Every routing decision that follows is possible because these two tracks exist, and every one of them is awkward if they do not.

Phase 2: build the drum rack

On the DRUMS track, drag a Drum Rack from the browser. You get a grid of pads, each one mapped to a MIDI note. The visible sixteen pads are one page of the 128 notes available, and the small overview strip on the left scrolls through the rest.

Now drag samples onto the pads. Almost anything from the browser can be dropped onto a pad, and Live creates a chain with a Simpler already set to that pad's note.

Use a fixed layout rather than dropping samples wherever they land, and use this specific one rather than inventing your own. The course drum box is not just a sketchpad, it is eight fixed voices in a fixed order: BD, SD, LT, HT, CH, OH, CP, CY. Kick, snare, low tom, hi tom, closed hat, open hat, clap, cymbal. Give those eight voices eight consecutive MIDI notes in that same order, C1 through G1 (36 through 43), and whatever you sketch in the browser sits on the matching pad the moment you open Live, no translation step in between.

That is a deliberate trade-off worth naming. Live's Receive chooser shows a General MIDI label next to every note, and General MIDI does not agree with this order: C#1 (37) reads as Side Stick there, not Snare. Ignore that label on these eight pads. Matching the drum box beats matching a standard nobody in this course is exporting to yet.

Leave the kick pad empty for now, because the kick is going to live somewhere else, but do not use that pad for anything else. The first eight notes are the ones the drum box can sketch. Above that, rim shot, ride and, from note 60 upwards, a full percussion set for afro house and organic house: congas, shakers, hand percussion. Real pads for a real kit, they just do not exist in the browser sketchpad, so they never come up in the translation exercise later in this article.

One adjustment before you move on. Set the closed hat and the open hat to the same choke group, using the Choke chooser in the input and output section of each chain. Chains in the same choke group silence each other, which is exactly what a real hi-hat does when the pedal closes. Then balance the pads with the volume and pan controls in the chain list, so the kit already sits together before any mixing happens.

Phase 3: the kick on its own track

Go back to the KICK track and drag a Simpler onto it, then drop your kick sample into it.

Simpler rather than another drum rack, for a reason that pays off later. Simpler puts the volume envelope, the transpose control and the sample start point directly in front of you, and those three controls are how a kick gets shaped. A drum rack hides them one level down.

If you have already built the kit with the kick inside the rack, you do not have to start over, but the detail matters here. Go to the Session View mixer, select the kick chain's title bar, and drag it to the mixer's drop area. This creates a new track with the devices and the MIDI notes. If you drag the chain from the chain list instead, you get the devices only and the notes stay behind.

Phase 4: the routing that makes sidechain possible

Write a four-on-the-floor pattern on the KICK track and a simple hat and clap pattern on DRUMS. Add a bass on a third track.

Put a compressor on the bass. Open the sidechain section with the triangle at the left of the device, switch it on, and set the audio source to the KICK track. The compressor now ducks the bass every time the kick plays, and only the kick, because the hats are no longer part of that signal.

That is as far as this article goes on sidechaining. The technique has considerably more to it than ducking a bass, and it is covered properly in Creative sidechaining: beyond the kick and bass. What matters here is that the session is now built so the technique is available at all.

Phase 5: save it once

Two things are worth keeping.

The rack itself: save it as a preset and it lands in your user library, ready to drop into any project.

The session: use File > Save Live Set As Template, and it appears in the browser's Templates category. If you want this to be the starting point for everything, use File > Save Live Set As Default Set instead, and every new set opens with the kick already on its own track.

The same idea in other DAWs

The names change, the structure does not.

In FL Studio the channel rack gives every drum its own channel, but they only become independent when you route each one to its own mixer insert. Send the kick to a dedicated insert, then use Fruity Peak Controller or the compressor in Fruity Limiter to duck the bass from it.

In Logic Pro, Drum Machine Designer already creates a sub-track per pad, so the separation exists by default. The compressor has a side chain selector in the top right of the plugin window where you choose the kick track.

In Bitwig, the Drum Machine device works like Live's drum rack, and chains can be routed out to their own tracks in the same way.

You don’t need expensive gear to produce electronic music

Somewhere along the way, "you need better gear" became the default explanation for why a track does not sound professional yet. It is a convenient story, mostly because an entire market of plugins, sample packs and influencer gear lists profits from you believing it. The less convenient truth is that the decisions separating an amateur track from a professional one rarely cost money at all. They cost time, attention, and a trained ear, and every one of them can be practiced on a laptop and a pair of headphones.

What actually separates amateur from professional

Arrangement decisions, when tension builds and when it releases, whether a section earns its length or overstays it. Groove decisions, whether a rhythm has been programmed with any human feel or left rigidly quantized. Harmonic choices, whether a progression was built to survive being looped for four minutes. Mix decisions, whether elements have been given room to breathe through EQ and compression instead of fighting each other for the same space. None of these require a specific plugin, synthesizer or audio interface. They require understanding what you are listening for, which is a skill built through repetition, not a purchase.

A Grammy-nominated production team put it plainly in a Spotify for Artists interview: no matter which DAW you use, what matters most is knowing your tools, and the two plugin categories they singled out as genuinely vital for any producer to understand were EQ and compression, not a specific expensive piece of hardware.

The real minimum to get started

A computer capable of running a DAW and a decent pair of headphones. That is the actual list. Modern laptops are powerful enough to compose, arrange, mix and master an entire track without any additional hardware, and plenty of released, label-ready tracks have been made entirely this way, sometimes literally on a laptop in a hotel room between shows. An audio interface and studio monitors improve the experience later, but they are optimizations, not prerequisites, and treating them as prerequisites is exactly the trap that keeps people endlessly preparing instead of finishing tracks.

Where spending money eventually makes sense, and where it does not

Accurate monitoring, whether through studio headphones or monitors in a treated room, is one of the few purchases that directly improves your ability to make good decisions, because you cannot fix what you cannot accurately hear. A synth plugin that duplicates something you already own does the opposite: it adds another menu of options to get lost in without improving a single decision you are actually capable of making yet. The honest test before buying anything is whether the purchase removes a real limitation you have already hit, or whether it is standing in for a skill you have not built yet.

Best DAW for electronic music: an honest 2026 comparison

Ask which DAW is best in any producer forum and you get a tribal argument, not an answer. The question itself is usually malformed. Different DAWs are built around different mental models of how music gets made, and the right one is the one that matches how you think, not the one with the most forum votes. This article compares four real options on that basis, and is honest about where OHXALA RECORDS fits into the picture.

What actually decides the right fit

Four questions matter more than any feature list: do you think in loops and sessions or do you record and arrange linearly, how steep a learning curve are you willing to climb, what is your actual budget, and does your platform, Mac, Windows or both, limit your options before you even start comparing features.

Its Playlist view has matured significantly but still trails Ableton's Session View for pure live-performance flexibility, which matters if performing sets live is part of your plan and matters far less if it is not.

Logic Pro: the best value if you are already on a Mac

Logic Pro is Mac-only, and at 199.99 USD one time, it is the cheapest full professional DAW compared here by a wide margin, largely because Apple bundles an enormous library of included instruments and effects that would otherwise cost thousands as third-party plugins. Its workflow leans traditional and linear compared to Ableton, and its tight integration with Apple Silicon makes it genuinely fast on modern Mac hardware. The obvious limitation is the platform lock, if you are not on a Mac and do not plan to be, this option is not available to you at all.

Bitwig Studio: deep modulation for sound designers

Bitwig Studio runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and its modulation system and hybrid Linear and Session view give sound designers a level of flexibility that neither Ableton nor FL Studio fully matches. The Producer license runs 399 USD, with twelve months of updates included and the option to renew the upgrade plan later rather than being forced into a subscription. The tradeoff is a much smaller user community and far fewer tutorials than the three DAWs above, which matters if you learn primarily by searching for how other people solved a specific problem.

The real question to ask yourself

Do you compose by triggering and rearranging loops, or do you record and arrange in a fixed timeline? Is live performance with the software itself part of your plan, or purely studio production? And realistically, what is your budget once you account for the platform you are already on? Answer those three honestly and most producers land on an obvious choice within a single conversation, without needing to read another ranked list.

How to make techno: kick, rumble and tension

Techno is not house played faster and darker. Treating it that way is the fastest way to miss what actually makes the genre work: techno is a discipline built around the kick and the management of tension, often with little or no melody at all. The kick is not just the rhythmic foundation here, it is frequently the lead instrument, and tension is built across five, seven, sometimes ten minutes rather than an eight-bar loop.

The kick as the central instrument

A techno kick needs to do more work than a house kick, because in many tracks it is competing with almost nothing else for attention. That means real distortion and harmonic content matter, a kick that is too clean and polished tends to sound thin and characterless next to tracks built with real grit in the low end. The fundamental frequency, the decay shape, and how much of the kick's tail is allowed to ring out all become genuine sound design decisions rather than a preset choice, because the kick is going to carry the track for minutes at a time with very little else to lean on.

The rumble: a sub layer, not a bassline

What producers call a techno rumble is not a separate bassline sitting under the kick, it is a processed copy of the kick itself, extended and reshaped to create a low, sustained sub presence. The standard approach duplicates the kick onto its own channel, filters out everything above the low end, adds a long reverb tail or a rhythmic delay, and pushes some saturation or distortion into it to thicken the sound. Because the rumble comes from the exact same source as the kick, the two share the same tonal character and lock together as a single low-end event instead of fighting each other. Sidechain compression usually finishes the job, ducking the rumble every time the kick hits, keeping the low end pumping in time rather than turning into a constant, undefined wall of sub.

One frequency discipline matters more here than almost anywhere else in electronic music: below roughly 150Hz, everything needs to collapse to mono, and the rumble should be the only element occupying that space. A stereo sub or a second competing bass element down there falls apart on a real club system, even if it sounds fine on headphones.

Tension instead of melody

Where a house track leans on harmony to hold interest, techno frequently has none at all, and builds interest instead through tension: filtering, layering, and subtle rhythmic variation stretched across a much longer arrangement. A single hi-hat pattern introduced sixty bars in, a filter slowly opening over two full minutes, a percussion layer that drops out and returns changed, these small, patient shifts are doing the job a chord progression does in other genres. Arrangement built for the floor, not the listener

Club techno is arranged to be mixed in and out of by a DJ, which shapes its structure more than almost any other single factor. A long intro, often sixteen to thirty-two bars of just kick and rumble with maybe a percussion loop, gives a DJ room to blend in cleanly. From there, tension accumulates gradually rather than building to a pop-style drop, and the track needs to still be interesting and mixable well past the point where a commercial dance track would already be winding down. This is arrangement built to serve a set, not a single listen on headphones, and it changes almost every structural decision compared to a shorter, hook-driven genre.

Common mistakes

An overly clean kick with no distortion or harmonic content is the single most common giveaway of someone new to the genre. Stacking multiple competing low-end elements instead of committing to one kick-and-rumble low end collapses badly on a real sound system even when it sounds fine in headphones. And arrangements that resolve too quickly, structured more like a pop track with a drop and a breakdown, tend to feel out of place in a genre built around patient, gradual tension across several minutes rather than a single climactic moment.

Get the low end right and let tension do the work harmony would do elsewhere, and a track holds a room for far longer than its short list of ingredients would suggest. House chord progressions that work, and why

A pop song can afford a chord progression that resolves neatly and never returns. A house track cannot. Without a verse and chorus to move through, the same four or eight bars of harmony loop for the length of an entire section, sometimes an entire track, which means a progression that sounds clever once and boring on the twentieth repeat is a real production risk. Understanding why certain progressions survive that repetition, rather than just copying a list of chord names, is what actually transfers to your own tracks.

Why simple progressions dominate the genre

Patterns like i-VI-III-VII or a straightforward i-iv-v show up constantly in house not because producers lack imagination, but because a progression built to loop needs room to breathe. Dropping a djembe sample over a house beat does not make a track afro house. The genre has real historical roots, tracing back to Johannesburg and Cape Town in the 1990s, where producers fused house music's four-on-the-floor pulse with local percussion traditions and the slower, laid-back energy of Kwaito, and it carries a rhythmic language that goes well beyond adding a percussion layer on top of an existing pattern. Programming it properly means understanding polyrhythm as structure, not decoration.

The foundation: slower and less aggressive than club house

How to make organic house: groove, texture and restraint

Organic house is not house music with a flute sample dropped on top. It is a different set of production instincts entirely, built around restraint rather than addition. Where a lot of electronic music reaches for bigger, brighter and more processed, organic house asks what happens when you pull back, let the groove breathe, and let a handful of textured, imperfect sounds do more work than a wall of clean, quantized ones.

Rhythm: layered, not loud

The four-on-the-floor foundation is still there, usually somewhere between 110 and 122 BPM, but the groove around it is built very differently from club-focused house. Instead of one dominant kick and a couple of sharp accents, organic house layers several percussion elements so that no single hit sticks out on its own, letting a fuller, more textured groove emerge from the combination. Shakers, hand percussion and soft, natural-sounding claps sit underneath the kick rather than competing with it, and the whole pattern avoids the perfectly gridded feel of a fully quantized beat. None of this means the kick gets weak. Step 1: the rhythm

Start with the drum sequencer, not the melody. Program a simple four-on-the-floor pattern, kick on every beat, a clap or snare on beats two and four, hi-hats filling the gaps between. Keep it sparse at this stage. It is much easier to add elements to a rhythm that already feels good than to strip away one that already feels crowded.

Step 2: the bass

Switch to the bass track in the piano roll and keep it deliberately simple, two or three notes is plenty for a first sketch. The goal here is not a clever bassline, it is a bassline that locks in with the kick you just programmed. Play it back against the drums a few times and adjust timing before adding anything else.

Step 3: chords and lead

With rhythm and bass in place, build the harmonic layer on top. A short, repeating chord progression on the chords track gives the sketch its emotional color, and a simple lead line, even just a few notes, gives it a melodic hook to hold onto. Neither needs to be complicated. An eight-bar sketch survives on a strong, simple idea far better than on a busy one.

Step 4: a light mix pass

Open the mixer and make small adjustments rather than dramatic ones. A touch of EQ to stop the bass and the kick from crowding the same low end, a light compressor to keep the mix feeling glued together, a little saturation if something feels thin, and the limiter set conservatively just to catch stray peaks. The goal at this stage is not a finished master, it is a sketch that sounds clear enough to judge fairly.

Step 5: listen to it loop

Play the full eight bars back in a loop and listen to it the way you would listen to someone else's track. Does the rhythm hold interest on its own? Does the bass and kick relationship feel tight or muddy? Does the chord progression still feel good on the fourth repeat? These are the same questions you will ask about a full track later, just compressed into eight bars where they are much faster to answer.
